Builders, contractors and building trades in the UK
Housebuilders and general builders, civil engineering contractors, electricians, plumbers and heating engineers, roofers, joiners, plasterers, painters and decorators: for builders’ merchants, manufacturers, plant hire firms and software vendors who want to reach the firms of one trade in a region by post or plan a sales territory.
Our UK dataset holds 2,676,396 records (as at 4 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.
Export of the whole industry: £379 (full price). Selections by nation, postcode area or your own filters are quoted on request.
Official statistics: 392,850 businesses in the UK according to ONS, UK business: activity, size and location 2026 (enterprises in March 2026, published 24 September 2026). Section F construction: divisions 41 construction of buildings (123,630), 42 civil engineering (22,840) and 43 specialised construction activities (246,380). This is the size of the market, not the size of our dataset.
Preparing a regional list for merchants and manufacturers
First define the trade and the delivery area, for example plumbing and heating firms in Scotland or in a handful of postcode areas. Making the website a required field lets you check each firm’s services afterwards.
The industry figure covers very different construction and finishing firms. It is neither a count of one trade nor proof that a firm is Gas Safe registered or belongs to a competent person scheme.
Price of the whole industry: £379. A selection by region, sub-industry or required fields is quoted individually; the whole-industry price is not a price promise for the filtered selection.
A request is not an order. Scope, fields, the date of the data and price are confirmed before you order.
What counts as Construction and building trades
The industry is section F of UK SIC 2007: construction of buildings (41), civil engineering (42) and specialised construction activities (43), which is where most trades sit. The classification files a firm under its main activity; whether it may do gas work or self-certify electrical work is a separate question, answered by registration schemes, not by the code.
Builders’ merchants are wholesalers (46.73) and belong to Wholesale and trade agents; garages are under Motor trade and garages. Architects and engineering consultancies have an industry of their own.

Gas Safe and competent person schemes: checks per firm
For some trades, registration decides what work a firm may do. The registers are public, but they are search tools for householders, not directories for marketing.
Gas Safe Register
HSE states that a gas engineering business must be on the Gas Safe Register to undertake gas work legally under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (reg. 3). The register covers Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Guernsey; its search finds registered engineers by postcode.
Competent person schemes
Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify certain work, such as electrical installations in homes or replacement windows, instead of the customer applying for building regulations approval. GOV.UK lists the current schemes; Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own building rules.
Companies House
A contractor trading as a limited company is on the register, with its registered office and the SIC codes it chose; the free snapshot has no phone numbers, emails or websites. Sole traders are not registered at Companies House, so for a one-person plastering or decorating business the contact details usually come only from its own website or listing.
Main trade and service area: two pitfalls when selecting
A firm has one main activity in the statistics. A plumber who also fits bathrooms and solar panels sits under 43.22, not additionally under electrical installation. A selection by trade gives you the firms with that focus, not every firm that offers the service.
The region follows the business address and its postcode. A roofer with a Chester address often works across the border in north-east Wales but counts as North West England. For field sales territories near a border, include the neighbouring postcode areas.
If a firm is a sole trader, its details are personal data: for a letter, the Art. 14 UK GDPR information and the right to object apply, and emails need consent or a soft opt-in (PECR reg. 22(3)). Before ringing any firm, screen the number against TPS and Corporate TPS (reg. 21).
Example request
Example request: we sell heat pumps through the trade and are looking for firms with main activity 43.22 in the North West and Yorkshire and The Humber that publish a website, for a postal mailing with a training invitation. Please leave out developers (41.10). How many records is that, and how current are the data?

Questions
Construction and building trades: frequently asked questions
The industry column covers construction as a whole; where a record carries a UK SIC code, the selection can be narrowed to 43.21 or 43.22, by nation or postcode area. If the code is missing or unclear for part of the trade, we tell you before quoting, not afterwards.
It is a search for householders: find a registered engineer by postcode or check an engineer’s registration. It is not a marketing list, and we do not copy it. Registration status is not a column in our export.
Calls are allowed only to numbers not registered with TPS or Corporate TPS and only if the firm has not objected, so screen before you dial. Emails to a limited company need no prior consent but must identify you and offer an opt-out; to a sole trader or a partnership in England, Wales or Northern Ireland they need consent or a soft opt-in. Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
