What counts as Associations, sport and culture

The industry links section R of UK SIC 2007 (arts, entertainment and recreation, gambling included) with division 94 (membership organisations). The ONS counts only organisations registered for VAT or PAYE, so clubs without such a registration are missing from the official figure.

Golf, cricket and football clubs are sport clubs (93.12), leisure centres and swimming pools sports facilities (93.11). A social club licensed to sell alcohol is a licensed club (56.30/1) and belongs to hospitality.

Charities and sports clubs: official lists with their own rules

Clubs take many legal forms: unincorporated associations, companies limited by guarantee, charities, co-operatives and community amateur sports clubs.

Charity registers
The Charity Commission offers a daily data extract for England and Wales. OSCR’s free daily download of the Scottish Charity Register may not be used for direct marketing. Northern Ireland has its own charity search.
Community amateur sports clubs
HMRC publishes a list of registered CASCs so that councils, governing bodies and Gift Aid donors can check a club.
Companies House and mutuals
Clubs incorporated as companies are at Companies House; co-operative and community benefit societies are on the FCA’s Mutuals Public Register. Unincorporated clubs are on neither.

Club or company: why the legal form matters here

A gym can be a limited company or a members’ club, a theatre a charity or part of a council. The legal form matters as much as the SIC code; the legal_form column shows it where known.

For a small club the contact address can be a volunteer’s home. That is fine for a postal mailing, but it is personal data under UK GDPR: give the Art. 14 information and respect objections. The export has no column for officials’ names.

Under PECR reg. 2 an “individual” includes an unincorporated body of individuals. An unincorporated club therefore needs consent or a soft opt-in before marketing emails (reg. 22); a club incorporated as a company is a corporate subscriber.

Example request: we sell sports ground equipment and are looking for sport clubs and facilities (SIC 93.11 and 93.12) in Wales, the North West and the West Midlands with a complete address, for a postal mailing in spring. How many records is that?

Questions

Associations, sport and culture: frequently asked questions

No list can promise that. Unincorporated clubs are not at Companies House and are on the charity registers or the CASC list only if they are charities or CASCs. The export contains clubs that appear with an address in our sources, typically those with a website.

Yes. Gyms are fitness facilities (93.13), leisure centres sports facilities (93.11). Where a record carries a UK SIC code (from the Companies House match, which is in progress), they can be selected by that code. Otherwise we select by business category and name on request; the quote states how precise the selection is.

An unincorporated club counts as an individual under PECR: you need consent or a soft opt-in. Incorporated clubs and trade bodies are corporate subscribers: no prior consent, but identify yourself and give an opt-out. Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
